A New York jury has convicted former President Donald Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, bringing his weekslong trial to a close. However, this ushers in a new phase of the historic case against the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a felony.

Trump now faces the possibility of a prison sentence or probation for his crimes stemming from a hush money payment scheme he facilitated ahead of the 2016 presidential election. His sentencing is currently set for July 11, though he is likely to appeal the conviction, which could significantly delay sentencing.

When Will Sentencing Occur?
Judge Juan Merchan has scheduled Trump's sentencing for 10 a.m. ET on July 11. For now, the former president will remain out of prison as prosecutors did not ask for any bond pending sentencing.

Can Trump Appeal?
Trump's attorney Todd Blanche already asked Merchan for an acquittal after the guilty verdict, which the judge swiftly rejected. Trump is expected to appeal the conviction through lengthy court proceedings.

Can He Run for President Again?
Legal experts say there is nothing in the U.S. Constitution barring a convicted criminal from running for president, as long as they meet age, citizenship and residency requirements. Trump has already launched his 2024 campaign for the White House.

Will It Impact His Voting Rights?

As a Florida resident, Trump's right to vote could be impacted if he is sentenced to prison and has not completed that sentence by the November 2024 election. However, this will depend on how Florida interprets the out-of-state New York conviction under its felon voting laws.

The conviction marks an unprecedented legal battle involving a former U.S. president that is likely far from over as Trump explores his appeals options.
